The responsibilities of the BMFTR as the Federal Ministry of Research cover technology and innovation and space.
It is also responsible for education at a federal level. As a research ministry, the BMFTR addresses new research topics and introduces new instruments for promoting innovation. In doing so, the BMFTR supports, among other things, the research and development of future-oriented technologies in order to create the economic and social foundations for Germany’s future. The ministry applies an expanded concept of innovation, which also includes social innovations, and involves society as a central actor in research and innovation processes.
The priorities of the BMFTR are reflected in its division into nine departments.
While the Central Department handles administrative tasks, the Executive Department primarily supports the Minister and the (Parliamentary) State Secretary. The Press Office and the Citizen Dialogue are also located within the Executive Department. The seven specialist departments are responsible for various – in some cases cross-cutting – areas of responsibility.
