The organisers of the conference understand democratic education to mean, on the one hand, the right of children and young people to make their own choices regarding learning and all other areas of daily life; and, on the other hand, that children and young people have an equal share in decision-making about how their organisations – in particular their schools – are managed and what agreements are needed. The conference therefore welcomes not only adults (teachers, educators, researchers and change makers), but also children and youths.
At more or less regular intervals, the European (EUDEC) is held together with the International Conference (IDEC), as was last the case in 2025.
