The Library of Lost Books Is an ambitious citizen science project by historians of the Leo Baeck Institute in Jerusalem and London. It aims to recover the books of the Higher Institute for Jewish Studies that was founded in Berlin in 1872 and closed down by the Nazis in 1942. With the “Library of Lost Books” exhibition the spirit and legacy of the books are to be kept alive. The book hunt is used to reconstruct the former library as best as possible. Discovered books are uploaded to a virtual library and can then be accessed by researchers worldwide. For teachers there is a selection of learning units for the 15+ age group that directly relate to the online exhibition. These materials give students a variety of ways to engage with the content, from researching biographies to designing their own bookplates, regardless of whether they participate in the book search project itself.
