UNESCO eAtlas of gender inequality in education
The eAtlas of Gender Inequality in Education presents a wide range of sex-disaggregated data produced by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) for all levels of education. Updated with the latest available data, the eAtlas lets readers explore the educational pathways of girls and boys in more than 200 countries and territories. The maps and ranking tables, which can be easily embedded on websites and blogs, can also be used to evaluate the extent to which educational disparities between the sexes are changing over time.
To better evaluate the extent of inequalities between girls and boys, we can use the gender parity index (GPI), which is defined as the value of a given indicator for girls divided by the value for boys. A GPI value between 0.97 and 1.03 signifies that there is no difference between girls and boys for a given indicator. A GPI of less than 0.97 indicates gender disparity in favour of boys, while the opposite is true for values exceeding 1.03.
The UIS collects data through its annual surveys and partnerships with organizations, such as the OECD and Eurostat. The Institute is the official source of data used to monitor international education and literacy targets.
