“The Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF)” is the second largest library worldwide. Its roots can be traced to 1368 when King Charles V established his library in the Louvre. Nowadays, Lous XI is considered to have founded the library in the late 15th century, as well as Francois I who in 1537 introduced the law that printers had to deliver a copy of each book to the royal library. At the time of the French Revolution, the library became the national library and it was enhanced by many collections. Today, BnF encompasses the new building - “Site François Mitterand” (completed in 1996), soring books and magazines, as well as “Site Richelieu” – an archive of maps, manuscripts and coins. The national library also embraces several thematically focused libraries (e.g. music, drama) and the digital library, Gallica. Besides offering conventional services, the BnF provides a laboratory to the public (“Labo Bnf”): Since June 2010, visitors can try future technologies in the domains of reading, writing or knowledge distribution. For instance, they can try word processing with a touchscreen, e-readers or a robot that translates and interprets texts into different languages, including sign language. Moreover, thematic exhibitions and talks are organised.
