Aging and Societal Development (age) was constituted in autumn 1987 as an interdisciplinary research group at the former Academy of Sciences and Technology in Berlin (West). From 1994 it was run by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The research group’s aim was to contribute to gerontological research by examining the present and the future of aging from multi- and interdisciplinary perspectives. To achieve this, two interconnected projects were developed in 1988. The first research project published a volume on the future of aging and societal development in 1992. The second research project published the `Berlin Aging Study (base)´ (BASE-Website) in 1996.
