The Institute is a centre for interdisciplinary and international comparative research in the social sciences, with a particular focus on employment, welfare systems, skills and training. The Institute carries out both basic and applied research. The combined effects of economic globalisation and technological progress, on the one hand, and of social changes such as the ageing of the population and new family structures and value preferences, on the other, have led to changes in the terms of competition. As a result, new demands are now being made of workers` skills and work organisation as well as of employment, education and welfare systems. The real extent of these changes and of the challenges associated with them is still not fully recognised and the process of dealing with them has scarcely begun.
