Academic degree awarded on the basis of an examination administered by a higher education institution (unlike the state examination) in a specific subject group, for example Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Engineering (M.Eng.). The MasterÂ’s degree is awarded by universities and equivalent institutions of higher education, colleges of art and music, and Fachhochschulen.
