In recent years, Germany has experienced an influx of immigrants seeking asylum, among them many young children. While there is a mandate to educate the refugee children and provide appropriate schooling, schools are faced with a lack of qualified teachers and resources. At the same time, education is a key to integration into German society. This research paper was published by the German Union for Education and Science (GEW). It presents the legal framework and situation as is, as well as current practice and challenges.
